Intro to raw feeding
Raw feeding means exactly what it says on the tin, raw feeding means feeding your dog uncooked diet or raw ingredients, so they won’t be fed the more commonly available cooked food. Benefits include improved overall health, better dental hygiene, smaller stools, a shinier coat and increased energy levels. It’s also easier to control weight, reinforces the immune system and can reduce allergies and sensitivities. Potential risks include bacteria in raw meat making dogs and/or humans unwell, injuries from sharp bones and an unbalanced diet if all nutrient requirements are not covered.
Muscle meat, often still on the bone, bones (either whole or ground), organs such as livers and kidneys, raw eggs, vegetables and fruit tend to be the common ingredients for a raw food diet for dogs. Raw feeding is easy to adjust as you can add or takeaway the guideline amount of their feed according to your dog’s specific requirements.
If you are starting out make sure the quality of food is good and that it is part of a well-balanced, age-appropriate diet that is researched and planned. As with all changes in diet for your favourite pooch these should be made gradually. We also recommend you speak with your vet, especially if your dog has any specific conditions or dietary requirements.
Have you thought about adding Turmeric to a raw diet?
Turmeric is a wonderful natural medicinal food, which when added to your canine companion’s food bowl will heal, nourish and protect their health.
Turmeric is a staple of the kitchen and whilst known for its’ uses in human health, it is an ingredient that has recently been studied extensively and proven to deliver health benefits for a range of animal health issues, including aches and pains as well as skin problems.
The active compound in Turmeric, called Curcumin, has been used as a traditional medicine for centuries and recently has become one of the most popular supplements taken by the health conscious. A good quality Turmeric supplement can help reduce pain, inflammation and toxins. Pet owners have increasingly used it as a natural supplement over medicinal alternatives to help with the same problems in their dogs. Many West Highland Terriers, widely known for their potential skin issues and joint problems have experienced the power of Turmeric in action. There have been many studies that show curcumin not only has positive effects on inflammation but can also reduce pain in the nervous system.
