Tavo teams up with industry experts to champion safety

Tavo Pets, the brand behind premium occupant crash-tested car seats and carriers, has uncovered the truth that 59% of motorists have driven with a dog unrestrained.

Even more alarmingly, 26% of motorists with dogs in the UK allow their pet to travel with its head out the car window. That’s estimated to be around 3.5m dogs that are being put in serious danger (based on a 13.5m pet dog population). It’s a familiar sight but a dog with its head out the window is a big risk to not just its own safety but everyone inside and outside the car.

To keep the nation’s much-loved pets safe, Tavo has teamed up with TV Vet and animal welfare advocate Dr Scott Miller, and dog behaviourist and trainer, Adem Fehmi to launch the campaign, ‘Safer Inside’. This campaign aims to raise awareness of the danger dogs are in when they are travelling with their heads out of the window – reinforcing the message that they are simply safer inside.Dr Scott Miller is among those calling for tighter rules for motorists who drive with a dog sticking its head out of the car window. He explains why: “You don’t want to imagine the injuries I see caused by dogs jumping out of car windows. If the dog is anxious or stressed, it adds further complexity to the scenario. I’m working to raise awareness that what many people in the UK think looks ‘cute’, can end in tragedy. It’s time pet safety in cars is given the same priority as human safety.”

Shining the spotlight on dog behaviour, Adem Fehmi, said: “Dog behaviour is complex. Whilst some owners might think that a dog panting with its head out of the window is a sign that they are enjoying the fresh air, panting can in fact be a sign of stress. Sitting inside a crash tested carrier, inside the vehicle is the best option for creating security and a calm and happy dog.”
